Charlotte Mason

An approach rooted in rich literature, nature study and a deep respect for childhood. Learning happens through engaging books, narration, handicrafts, composer and artist study, and regular time outdoors to foster a love of nature. Knowledge is treated as a living thing — to be encountered, not just memorised.

What Spark helps you capture

These are the learning areas Spark will help you log, reflect on, inspire activity ideas around, and include in your portfolio.

Living books

Engaging non-fiction and fiction books that bring subjects to life.

Narration

The child retells what they have read or heard in their own words. Simple in practice, powerful for comprehension and memory.

Nature study

Regular time outdoors observing the seasons, species and the beauty of what grows and lives around us.

Handicrafts

Knitting, sewing, woodwork, weaving — making things with hands and tools. Develops patience, concentration and practical skills.

Composer study

Listening to and learning about one composer at a time, building musical knowledge through familiarity.

Artist study

Spending time engaging with the work of one artist at a time. Developing a genuine relationship with great art.

Copywork

Carefully copying passages from quality literature by hand. Develops handwriting, spelling and an instinct for good writing.

Dictation

A passage read aloud for the child to write down. Builds spelling and grammar in context, connected to real writing.

Nature journaling

Documenting what was seen during nature study — sketches, writing, and sometimes pressed plants.

Geography

Map work, place studies and exploration of the wider world through living books and stories from different countries.

History

Chronological study using living books, timelines and biographies. History as a living story, rather than a list of dates.

Mental arithmetic

Oral maths practice to build quick number sense and confident recall without always reaching for pencil and paper.

Foreign language

Early, conversational introduction to one or more modern languages — songs, phrases and simple communication first.

Free reading

Independent reading of self-chosen books purely for pleasure. Builds a lifelong reading habit and broadens vocabulary.

Outdoor play

Unhurried time outdoors for exploration, movement and unstructured play. A daily non-negotiable.
