Unschooling

Learning happens naturally through real life, play and interests — without a curriculum, timetable or imposed agenda. Life is the lesson. Children learn what they need when they need it, and adults are there to open doors rather than direct the journey.

What Spark helps you capture

These are the learning areas Spark will help you log, reflect on, inspire activity ideas around, and include in your portfolio.

Real-world skills

Skills and knowledge acquired through authentic everyday experiences — shopping, cooking, travel, conversation, building things.

Exploration and play

Unstructured time to play, imagine and explore freely.

Passions and deep dives

Spending extended time on a passion or question the child cares about.

Community participation

Learning through involvement in the wider world — volunteering, local events, libraries, conversations. The world as classroom.

Natural mathematics

Numbers, patterns and problem-solving encountered through real life. Maths that has an obvious point.

Self-directed reading

Reading driven entirely by the child's own curiosity.

Technology and media

Learning through digital tools, games, video making, coding, and creative software.

Creative expression

Art, music, writing, drama, building, designing — whatever form creativity takes.

Social learning

Learning through relationships — navigating friendships, collaborating, understanding different perspectives.

Problem solving

Encountering a genuine obstacle and working out how to get past it — building confidence and resilience.

Self-directed writing

Writing the child initiates for their own purposes — stories, lists, letters, journals, scripts, game rules.

“It doesn't feel like admin. That's the miracle.”

Chris · home educating dad, Suffolk

“Our maths tutor logs directly into Spark after each session. Everything is in one place and I don't have to remember to add it myself.”

Nicola · home educating mum, Surrey

“The activity suggestions are absolutely brilliant — they've helped give us so many ideas without having to go down any Google or Pinterest rabbit-holes!”

Alice · home educating mum, Gloucestershire

“Simple enough that I actually use it. That's rarer than it sounds.”

Meg · home educating mum, Edinburgh

“The portfolio feature alone is worth it. What used to take me a whole weekend now only takes a few minutes.”

Tom · home educating dad, Bristol

“My daughter asks to add things herself now. Seeing her own learning reflected back at her has done something really lovely for her confidence.”

Andrea · home educating mum, Norfolk

“I didn't have a word for what our learning style was. The quiz suggested Charlotte Mason, and not only does it fit what we were already doing — it's made us so much more intentional with how we approach our days.”

Laura · home educating mum, Shropshire
